ऐश्वर्यमदपापिष्ठा मदाः पानमदादयः ॥
ऐश्वर्यमदमत्तो हि नापतित्वा विबुध्यते ॥
इन्द्रियैर् इन्द्रियार्थेषु वर्तमानैर् अनिग्रहैः ॥
तैर् अयं ताप्यते लोको नक्षत्राणि ग्रहैर् इव ॥
यो जितः पञ्चवर्गेण सहजेनात्मकर्शिना ॥
आपदस् तस्य वर्धन्ते शुक्लपक्ष इवोडुराट् ॥
अविजित्य य आत्मानम् अमात्यान् विजिगीषते ॥
अमित्रान् वाजितामात्यः सो ऽवशः परिहीयते ॥
आत्मानम् एव प्रथमं देशरूपेण यो जयेत् ॥
ततो ऽमात्यान् अमित्रांश् च न मोघं विजिगीषते ॥

aiśvaryamadamatto hi nāpatitvā vibudhyate ||
indriyair indriyārtheṣu vartamānair anigrahaiḥ ||
tair ayaṃ tāpyate loko nakṣatrāṇi grahair iva ||
yo jitaḥ pañcavargeṇa sahajenātmakarśinā ||
āpadas tasya vardhante śuklapakṣa ivoḍurāṭ ||
avijitya ya ātmānam amātyān vijigīṣate ||
amitrān vājitāmātyaḥ so 'vaśaḥ parihīyate ||
ātmānam eva prathamaṃ deśarūpeṇa yo jayet ||
tato 'mātyān amitrāṃś ca na moghaṃ vijigīṣate ||
Fools seek to injure the wise with false reproaches and harsh words. As a result, they thereby take upon themselves the sins of the wise, while the wise, freed of their own sins, are absolved. In wrath lies the strength of the wicked; in the code of law lies the strength of kings and their care for the weak and for women; and in forgiveness lies the strength of the virtuous. It is said, O king, that nothing is harder to master than speech.
