तत्र गङ्गाजले रम्ये विविक्ते क्रीडयन् स्त्रियः ॥
ईर्ष्युर् गन्धर्वराजः स्म जलक्रीडाम् उपागतः ॥
शब्दं तेषां स शुश्राव नदीं समुपसर्पताम् ॥
तेन शब्देन चाविष्टश् चुक्रोध बलवद् बली ॥
स दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवांस् तत्र सह मात्रा परंतपान् ॥
विस्फारयन् धनुर् घोरम् इदं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
tatra gaṅgājale ramye vivikte krīḍayan striyaḥ ||
īrṣyur gandharvarājaḥ sma jalakrīḍām upāgataḥ ||
śabdaṃ teṣāṃ sa śuśrāva nadīṃ samupasarpatām ||
tena śabdena cāviṣṭaś cukrodha balavad balī ||
sa dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavāṃs tatra saha mātrā paraṃtapān ||
visphārayan dhanur ghoram idaṃ vacanam abravīt ||
"There, in the pleasant, secluded water of the Ganga, sporting with his wives, the jealous king of the gandharvas was indulging in water-play. Hearing the sound of those approaching the river, seized by anger at that sound, he grew furiously enraged; and seeing there the Pandavas with their mother, stretching his terrible bow, he spoke this word."

Here anger is born of jealous self-rule over a place. It is telling that the gandharva rages at the mere sound of footsteps: one who imagines himself lord of a domain cannot bear even the approach of strangers. Here we see how the pride of possession turns the smallest thing into wrath. Thus the text shows the folly of claiming what can belong to no one; and the gandharva's fury over the waters of the Ganga is an example of arrogance destined to be humbled.
