अर्जुन उवाच
त्वत्तो ऽस्त्रेण वृणोम्य् अश्वान् संयोगः शाश्वतो ऽस्तु नौ ॥
सखे तद् ब्रूहि गन्धर्व युष्मभ्यो यद् भयं त्यजेत् ॥

अनुवाद
Arjuna said: 'From you, in exchange for the weapon, I take the horses; let our union be everlasting. Friend, tell me, O gandharva, what would dispel the fear of you [gandharvas].'

Here Arjuna forges an alliance between equals and wishes it eternal. It is telling that he takes the horses 'in exchange' for the weapon: by accepting the gift as an exchange, he preserved the dignity of friendship. Telling, too, is his word 'friend,' addressed to a recent enemy: the defeated has become a companion. Here it is seen that a noble victory ends not in subjugation but in friendship. Thus scripture shows that enmity, resolved through magnanimity, is transformed into an unbreakable bond; and Arjuna, seeking a means to mutual safety, establishes peace between men and gandharvas.
