अर्जुन उवाच
यदि प्रीतेन वा दत्तं संशये जीवितस्य वा ॥
विद्या वित्तं श्रुतं वापि न तद् गन्धर्व कामये ॥

Here Arjuna shows the nobility that refuses a gift extorted by fear. It is telling that he does not wish to accept the vidya as ransom for a life: a gift wrung from the giver's need is, for him, not a gift but a transaction under compulsion. Here is the purity of selflessness: the noble accept an offering of love, but not payment born of fear. Thus scripture shows the loftiness of Arjuna's spirit, for whom only what is given from the heart has value; and by this he distinguishes friendship from a bribe.
