Arjuna said: "This intimidation, gandharva, has no effect on those who know weapons; used against them, it dissolves like foam. Therefore I will fight with a divine weapon, and not with illusion. Long ago this weapon of Agni was given by Brihaspati to Bharadvaja, from Bharadvaja to Agnivesya, from Agnivesya to my teacher; and he, Drona, the best of brahmins, gave it to me."

Here Arjuna rejects illusion and sets against it the strength of lineage. It is telling that he names the descent of the weapon -- from Brihaspati down to Drona: divine knowledge does not descend by self-assertion but through a chain of teachers. Here is an image of parampara: genuine power and truth are transmitted through a succession of masters, and are thereby full and effective. Thus the text shows that Arjuna is strong not through trickery but through knowledge lawfully received; and the lineage that sanctifies his weapon stands against the gandharva's empty illusion.
