एवं पुरुषशार्दूलो महाबुद्धिर् जनार्दनः ॥
पाण्डवैर् घातयाम् आस जरासंधम् अरिं तदा ॥
घातयित्वा जरासंधं बुद्धिपूर्वम् अरिंदमः ॥
धर्मराजम् अनुज्ञाप्य पृथां कृष्णां च भारत ॥
सुभद्रां भीमसेनं च फल्गुनं यमजौ तथा ॥
धौम्यम् आमन्त्रयित्वा च प्रययौ स्वां पुरीं प्रति ॥
evaṃ puruṣaśārdūlo mahābuddhir janārdanaḥ ||
pāṇḍavair ghātayām āsa jarāsaṃdham ariṃ tadā ||
ghātayitvā jarāsaṃdhaṃ buddhipūrvam ariṃdamaḥ ||
dharmarājam anujñāpya pṛthāṃ kṛṣṇāṃ ca bhārata ||
subhadrāṃ bhīmasenaṃ ca phalgunaṃ yamajau tathā ||
dhaumyam āmantrayitvā ca prayayau svāṃ purīṃ prati ||
Thus the tiger among men, the great-minded Janardana, caused the enemy Jarasandha to be slain then by the hands of the Pandavas. Having deliberately caused Jarasandha to be slain, the tamer of foes, having asked leave of Dharmaraja, of Pritha and of Krishna [Draupadi], O Bharata, of Subhadra, Bhimasena, Phalguna, and of the twins as well, and having taken leave of Dhaumya, set out toward his own city.

It is twice underscored: Janardana slew the enemy "by the hands of the Pandavas" and "deliberately" (buddhi-purvam). It is telling that the true doer is the Lord, and the instruments are his devotees; the great deed is accomplished not by impulse but by understanding from above. Telling too is another thing: as he departs, Krishna asks leave of everyone, down to the last, not excluding the wives and the priest. He who is above all honors each one; the Lord of the world shows perfect courtesy, slighting none of those dear to him.
