किमर्थं च विषादस् ते तद् ब्रूहि वदतां वर ॥
न शोचितव्यं विदुषा शोकः कार्यविनाशनः ॥
शोचन् नन्दयते शत्रून् कर्शयत्य् अपि बान्धवान् ॥
क्शीयते च नरस् तस्मान् न त्वं शोचितुम् अर्हसि ॥

kimarthaṃ ca viṣādas te tad brūhi vadatāṃ vara ||
na śocitavyaṃ viduṣā śokaḥ kāryavināśanaḥ ||
śocan nandayate śatrūn karśayaty api bāndhavān ||
kśīyate ca naras tasmān na tvaṃ śocitum arhasi ||

शब्दशः अर्थ

किमर्थम् च विषादः तेkimartham ca viṣādaḥ teand for what reason your despair; and to what end your despair
तत् ब्रूहि वदताम् वरtat brūhi vadatām varatell that, O best of speakers; tell it, O foremost of speakers
न शोचितव्यम् विदुषाna śocitavyam viduṣāone who knows should not grieve; the wise should not grieve
शोकः कार्यविनाशनःśokaḥ kāryavināśanaḥgrief is the destroyer of purpose; grief destroys the task
शोचन् नन्दयते शत्रून्śocan nandayate śatrūnone who grieves gladdens enemies; grieving, you gladden your enemies
कर्शयति अपि बान्धवान्karśayati api bāndhavānand wears down kinsmen; and wear down your kin
क्षीयते च नरः तस्मात्kṣīyate ca naraḥ tasmātand a man wastes away because of it; and a man withers because of it
न त्वम् शोचितुम् अर्हसिna tvam śocitum arhasiit is not fitting for you to grieve; it does not befit you to grieve
अनुवाद

"And to what end your despair? Tell that, O best of speakers. One who knows should not grieve — grief is the destroyer of purpose. Grieving, you gladden your enemies and wear down your kin, and a man withers because of it; it does not befit you to grieve."
