ततस् तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रत्युत्थाय कृताञ्जली ॥
वासुदेवार्जुनौ शर्वं तुष्टुवाते महामती ॥
नमो भवाय शर्वाय रुद्राय वरदाय च ॥
पशूनां पतये नित्यम् उग्राय च कपर्दिने ॥
महादेवाय भीमाय त्र्यम्बकाय च शम्भवे ॥
ईशानाय भगघ्नाय नमो ऽस्त्व् अन्धकघातिने ॥
tatas tad vacanaṃ śrutvā pratyutthāya kṛtāñjalī ||
vāsudevārjunau śarvaṃ tuṣṭuvāte mahāmatī ||
namo bhavāya śarvāya rudrāya varadāya ca ||
paśūnāṃ pataye nityam ugrāya ca kapardine ||
mahādevāya bhīmāya tryambakāya ca śambhave ||
īśānāya bhagaghnāya namo 'stv andhakaghātine ||
Then, having heard that word, rising with joined palms, Vasudeva and Arjuna, both wise, praised Sharva: "Homage to Bhava, to Sharva, to Rudra and the giver of boons, to the lord of creatures forever, to the fierce one and Kapardin! To Mahadeva, Bhima, Tryambaka and Shambhu, to Ishana, slayer of Bhaga -- let there be homage to the slayer of Andhaka!"

Here begins the Shatarudriya, the hymn of the hundred names of Rudra. Each name is a facet of the one: 'bhava' (being), 'sharva' (the all-encompassing), 'pashunam pati' (lord of creatures), 'shambhu' (the benevolent), 'ishana' (the ruler). It is telling that the praise piles up names, for none can contain God: the multiplicity of names is a sign of the inexhaustibility of the one praised. The verse teaches that worship of God flowers in the invocation of His names: each name is a gateway to one of His qualities, and their stringing together is not idle speech but the apprehension of Him who is beyond any single name.
