ततः प्रीतं भवं ज्ञात्वा स्मृतिमान् अर्जुनस् तदा ॥
वरम् आरण्यकं दत्तं दर्शनं शंकरस्य च ॥
मनसा चिन्तयाम् आस तन् मे संपद्यताम् इति ॥
तस्य तन् मतम् आज्ञाय प्रीतः प्रादाद् वरं भवः ॥
तच् च पाशुपतं घोरं प्रतिज्ञायाश् च पारणम् ॥
tataḥ prītaṃ bhavaṃ jñātvā smṛtimān arjunas tadā ||
varam āraṇyakaṃ dattaṃ darśanaṃ śaṃkarasya ca ||
manasā cintayām āsa tan me saṃpadyatām iti ||
tasya tan matam ājñāya prītaḥ prādād varaṃ bhavaḥ ||
tac ca pāśupataṃ ghoraṃ pratijñāyāś ca pāraṇam ||
Then, learning that Bhava was pleased, mindful Arjuna recalled the boon given in the forest, and the earlier vision of Shankara. Understanding his intent, Bhava, pleased, granted the boon — the terrible weapon Pashupata — and the fulfillment of the vow.

Here past and present converge: Arjuna, "smṛtimān," mindful, remembers his earlier meeting with Shiva (in the guise of the hunter) and the promise made then — now fulfilled. "Prītaḥ prādāt," "pleased, he gave": the gift is the fruit of grace, not of bargaining. It is significant that along with the weapon comes also "pratijñāyāḥ pāraṇam," the fulfillment of the vow. The verse teaches that the Lord's grace is mindful and true: what was once promised is not forgotten, and in its time is fulfilled completely; and the Lord's pleasure grants not the weapon alone, but resolution of the very need for which one came to Him.
