अचिन्त्यायाम्बिकाभर्त्रे सर्वदेवस्तुताय च ॥
वृषध्वजाय पिङ्गाय जटिने ब्रह्मचारिणे ॥
तप्यमानाय सलिले ब्रह्मण्यायाजिताय च ॥
विश्वात्मने विश्वसृजे विश्वम् आवृत्य तिष्ठते ॥
acintyāyāmbikābhartre sarvadevastutāya ca ||
vṛṣadhvajāya piṅgāya jaṭine brahmacāriṇe ||
tapyamānāya salile brahmaṇyāyājitāya ca ||
viśvātmane viśvasṛje viśvam āvṛtya tiṣṭhate ||
"To the inconceivable one, the husband of Ambika, praised by all the gods; to the bull-bannered one, the ruddy one, the matted-haired one, the celibate one; to him who performs austerity in the water, devoted to Brahman, the unconquered; to the soul of the universe, the creator of the universe, who encompasses the universe and stands [above it]!"

The praise ascends to the cosmic: "viśvātmane viśvasṛje viśvam āvṛtya tiṣṭhate", "to the soul of the world, the creator of the world, who encompasses the world and stands [above it]." God is within creation as its soul, and above it as its encompasser. "Brahmacāriṇe... tapyamānāya salile", "to the celibate one, performing austerity in the water" -- beside the cosmic majesty, austerity again. It is telling that cosmic fullness and personal asceticism are joined together. The verse teaches that the supreme principle is at once immanent and transcendent: it is the soul of all and above all; and God's greatness does not cancel Him as a personal ascetic, honored by all the gods.
