वध्यमाना रणे राजन् पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयास् तथा ॥
त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त पङ्कमग्ना इव द्विपाः ॥
द्रोणस्य च व्यदृश्यन्त विसर्पन्तो महाशराः ॥
गभस्तय इवार्कस्य प्रतपन्तः समन्ततः ॥
तस्मिन् द्रोणेन निहताः पाञ्चालाः पञ्चविंशतिः ॥
महारथसमाख्याता धृष्टद्युम्नस्य संमताः ॥
पाण्डूनां सर्वसैन्येषु पाञ्चालानां तथैव च ॥
द्रोणं स्म ददृशुः शूरं विनिघ्नन्तं वरान् वरान् ॥
vadhyamānā raṇe rājan pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayās tathā ||
trātāraṃ nādhyagacchanta paṅkamagnā iva dvipāḥ ||
droṇasya ca vyadṛśyanta visarpanto mahāśarāḥ ||
gabhastaya ivārkasya pratapantaḥ samantataḥ ||
tasmin droṇena nihatāḥ pāñcālāḥ pañcaviṃśatiḥ ||
mahārathasamākhyātā dhṛṣṭadyumnasya saṃmatāḥ ||
pāṇḍūnāṃ sarvasainyeṣu pāñcālānāṃ tathaiva ca ||
droṇaṃ sma dadṛśuḥ śūraṃ vinighnantaṃ varān varān ||
"Struck down in battle, o king, the Pandavas and Srinjayas likewise found no protector, like elephants sunk in a swamp. And Drona's spreading great arrows were seen, like the sun's rays blazing on every side. In that battle twenty-five Panchalas were slain by Drona, renowned as great warriors, esteemed by Dhrishtadyumna. Throughout all the armies of the Pandus and the Panchalas alike, they saw the hero Drona slaying the best of the best."

An army without a protector is 'paṅkamagnā iva dvipāḥ', like elephants sunk in a mire: all their strength is powerless when there is no one to guard them. It is telling that even the strong need a defender, and without one they perish like a giant stuck in the mud. The verse teaches that neither numbers nor strength alone save: an army needs a guardian, and without a defending leader even the mighty are helpless -- which is why the rescue of one Satyaki became the business of the whole host.
