न नूनं स्वस्ति पार्थस्य यथा नदति शङ्खराट् ॥
कौरवाश् च यथा हृष्टा विनदन्ति मुहुर् मुहुः ॥

अजातशत्रुः कौन्तेयः सात्वतं प्रत्यभाषत ॥
बाष्पगद्गदया वाचा मुह्यमानो मुहुर् मुहुः ॥
कृत्यस्यानन्तरापेक्षी शैनेयं शिनिपुंगवम् ॥
यः स धर्मः पुरा दृष्टः सद्भिः शैनेय शाश्वतः ॥
सांपराये सुहृत्कृत्ये तस्य कालो ऽयम् आगतः ॥

sāṃparāye suhṛtkṛtye tasya kālo 'yam āgataḥ ||
"'No, truly, all is not well with Partha, if the king of conches trumpets thus, and the Kauravas roar in joy again and again.' So reflecting, with troubled soul, Ajatashatru, son of Kunti, turned to Satvata [Satyaki] with a voice broken by tears, swooning again and again: 'That eternal duty which was seen of old by the good, O descendant of Shini — the duty in battle, in the deed for a friend — its hour has now come.'"

The king of dharma, with a voice trembling from tears (bāṣpagadgadayā vācā), calls upon suhṛtkṛtya — the duty of serving a friend: the highest moment of friendship is the hour of need. It is telling that even Ajatashatru, "he who has no enemy," is overcome with anxiety for his brother. The verse teaches that the true duty of friendship is proven not in prosperity but in distress: the eternal law perceived by the righteous commands that in the hour of danger one give oneself for a friend, and the arrival of the time for such service is the highest calling of one who loves.
