विक्रान्तस्य च वीरस्य युद्धे प्रार्थयतो यशः ॥
शूर एव सहायः स्यान् नेतरः प्राकृतो जनः ॥
ईदृशे तु परामर्दे वर्तमानस्य माधव ॥
त्वद् अन्यो हि रणे गोप्ता विजयस्य न विद्यते ॥
श्लाघन्न् एव हि कर्माणि शतशस् तव पाण्डवः ॥
मम संजनयन् हर्षं पुनः पुनर् अकीर्तयत् ॥
लघ्वस्त्रश् चित्रयोधी च तथा लघुपराक्रमः ॥
प्राज्ञः सर्वास्त्रविच् छूरो मुह्यते न च संयुगे ॥
महास्कन्धो महोरस्को महाबाहुर् महाधनुः ॥
महाबलो महावीर्यः स महात्मा महारथः ॥
शिष्यो मम सखा चैव प्रियो ऽस्याहं प्रियश् च मे ॥
युयुधानः सहायो मे प्रमथिष्यति कौरवान् ॥

"For a valiant hero seeking glory in battle, only a hero may be his ally, not another, a common man. For besides you, no guardian of Vijaya [Arjuna] is to be found in battle. Praising your deeds a hundred times over, Pandava [Arjuna], kindling joy in me, again and again glorified you: 'Swift with weapons and striking in manifold ways, and likewise quick in valor, wise, knowing every weapon, a hero, never confounded in battle; my disciple and friend — I am dear to him, and he is dear to me; Yuyudhana is my helper, he will crush the Kauravas.'"

Śūra eva sahāyaḥ syāt — only a hero is fit to be the companion-in-arms of a hero: a great task demands a worthy comrade. Yudhishthira quotes Arjuna's very words, lovingly listing his friend's virtues. It is telling that their bond — śiṣyaḥ... sakhā... priyaḥ — is discipleship, friendship, and mutual love. The verse teaches that in the hour of trial, support can come only from one equal in spirit: an ordinary man will not stand where a hero is needed, and men entrust themselves only to those bound to them by both valor and love.
