सात्वतो ऽपि शितैर् बाणैर् गजानीकम् अयोधयत् ॥
पर्वतान् इव वर्षेण तपान्ते जलदो महान् ॥
वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शैर् वध्यमानाः शरैर् गजाः ॥
प्राद्रवन् रणम् उत्सृज्य शिनिवीर्यसमीरितैः ॥
शीर्णदन्ता विरुधिरा भिन्नमस्तकपिण्डकाः ॥
विशीर्णकर्णास्यकरा विनियन्तृपताकिनः ॥
संभिन्नवर्मघण्टाश् च संनिकृत्तमहाध्वजाः ॥
हतारोहा दिशो राजन् भेजिरे भ्रष्टकम्बलाः ॥
रुवन्तो विविधान् रावाञ् जलदोपमनिस्वनाः ॥
नाराचैर् वत्सदन्तैश् च सात्वतेन विदारिताः ॥
sātvato 'pi śitair bāṇair gajānīkam ayodhayat ||
parvatān iva varṣeṇa tapānte jalado mahān ||
vajrāśanisamasparśair vadhyamānāḥ śarair gajāḥ ||
prādravan raṇam utsṛjya śinivīryasamīritaiḥ ||
śīrṇadantā virudhirā bhinnamastakapiṇḍakāḥ ||
viśīrṇakarṇāsyakarā viniyantṛpatākinaḥ ||
saṃbhinnavarmaghaṇṭāś ca saṃnikṛttamahādhvajāḥ ||
hatārohā diśo rājan bhejire bhraṣṭakambalāḥ ||
ruvanto vividhān rāvāñ jaladopamanisvanāḥ ||
nārācair vatsadantaiś ca sātvatena vidāritāḥ ||
And the Satvata fought [against] the array of elephants with sharp arrows, as a great cloud at the end of the heat [drenches] mountains with rain. Struck by arrows whose touch was like the thunderbolt, loosed by the might of Shini's [descendant], the elephants fled, abandoning the battle: [with] shattered tusks, bloodied, [with] pierced frontal lobes, [with] torn ears, mouths, trunks, [without] drivers, [yet] with banners, and [with] shattered armor and bells, [with] great banners cut down, [with] slain riders, [in every] direction, o king, they scattered, [with] fallen blankets, bellowing all manner of cries [with] a din like [that of] clouds, torn apart by the Satvata with iron arrows and [arrows shaped like] calf's teeth.

Satyaki is likened to "tapānte jaladaḥ," a cloud at the end of the heat, drenching the mountains: a fearsome force unleashed upon giants. The elephants, the pride of the army, are turned into a bloodied, bellowing throng. It is telling that the greatest of animals, guiltlessly cast into the strife, suffer most grievously of all. The verse teaches that war destroys even the speechless: the immense might of elephants does not save them, but only makes their destruction more terrible — and beholding it is a bitter reproach to the discord that drags even innocent creatures to their ruin.
