समाप्य च हरिश्चन्द्रःsamāpya ca hariścandraḥand having completed, Harishchandra
महा-यज्ञम् प्रताप-वान्mahā-yajñam pratāpa-vānthe great sacrifice, the mighty one,
अभिषिक्तः सः शुशुभेabhiṣiktaḥ saḥ śuśubheanointed, he shone
साम्राज्येन नर-अधिपsāmrājyena nara-adhipawith sovereignty, O lord of men;
ये च अन्ये अपि मही-पालाःye ca anye api mahī-pālāḥand other kings, whoever
राजसूयम् महा-क्रतुम्rājasūyam mahā-kratumthe Rajasuya, the great sacrifice,
यजन्ते ते महेन्द्रेणyajante te mahendreṇaperform, they together with Mahendra [Indra]
मोदन्ते सह भारतmodante saha bhāratarejoice together, O Bharata;
ये च अपि निधनम् प्राप्ताःye ca api nidhanam prāptāḥand those who met death
संग्रामेषु अपलायिनःsaṃgrāmeṣu apalāyinaḥin battles, without retreating,
ते तत्-सदः समासाद्यte tat-sadaḥ samāsādyathey, having reached [his] assembly,
मोदन्ते भरत-ऋषभmodante bharata-ṛṣabharejoice, O bull of the Bharatas;
तपसा ये च तीव्रेणtapasā ye ca tīvreṇaand those who by severe austerity
त्यजन्ति इह कलेवरम्tyajanti iha kalevaramleave [their] body here,
ते अपि तत् स्थानम् आसाद्यte api tat sthānam āsādyathey too, having reached that abode,
श्रीमन्तः भान्ति नित्यशःśrīmantaḥ bhānti nityaśaḥresplendent, shine eternally;

Here three paths to Indra's abode are named: sacrifice, valor in battle without flight, and severe austerity. It is telling that the heavenly destination is reached by more than one way: the sacrificer, the fallen hero, and the ascetic all rise alike. Thus the scripture shows many gates to the high destination; and next comes the word of Pandu.
