बहुविघ्नश् च नृपते क्रतुर् एष स्मृतो महान् ॥
छिद्राण्य् अत्र हि वाञ्छन्ति यज्ञघ्ना ब्रह्मराक्षसाः ॥
युद्धं च पृष्ठगमनं पृथिवीक्षयकारकम् ॥
किं चिद् एव निमित्तं च भवत्य् अत्र क्षयावहम् ॥
एतत् संचिन्त्य राजेन्द्र यत् क्षमं तत् समाचर ॥
अप्रमत्तोत्थितो नित्यं चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य रक्षणे ॥
भव एधस्व मोदस्व दानैस् तर्पय च द्विजान् ॥

युद्धम् च पृष्ठ-गमनम्yuddham ca pṛṣṭha-gamanamand the war that follows [it],
पृथिवी-क्षय-कारकम्pṛthivī-kṣaya-kārakambrings ruin to the earth;
किम् चित् एव निमित्तम् चkim cit eva nimittam caand [any] small pretext
भवति अत्र क्षय-आवहम्bhavati atra kṣaya-āvahammay here prove to bring devastation;
एतत् संचिन्त्य राज-इन्द्रetat saṃcintya rāja-indrahaving considered this, O lord of kings,
यत् क्षमम् तत् समाचरyat kṣamam tat samācarado what is fitting;
अप्रमत्त-उत्थितः नित्यम्apramatta-utthitaḥ nityamvigilant, ever active,
चातुर्-वर्ण्यस्य रक्षणेcātur-varṇyasya rakṣaṇein the protection of the four orders;

译文

"But this great sacrifice, as it is said, is fraught with many obstacles: sacrifice-destroying brahma-rakshasas seek flaws in it; and the war that follows it brings ruin to the earth, and any small pretext may here turn into devastation. Having considered this, O lord of kings, do what is fitting; vigilant, ever active in protecting the four orders, be [good], prosper, rejoice, and gratify the brahmins with gifts."
