बहु-विघ्नः च नृपतेbahu-vighnaḥ ca nṛpate'[but] fraught with many obstacles, O lord,
क्रतुः एषः स्मृतः महान्kratuḥ eṣaḥ smṛtaḥ mahānis this great sacrifice, as it is said;
छिद्राणि अत्र हि वाञ्छन्तिchidrāṇi atra hi vāñchantiflaws in it are sought
यज्ञ-घ्नाः ब्रह्म-राक्षसाःyajña-ghnāḥ brahma-rākṣasāḥby sacrifice-destroying brahma-rakshasas;
युद्धम् च पृष्ठ-गमनम्yuddham ca pṛṣṭha-gamanamand the war that follows [it],
पृथिवी-क्षय-कारकम्pṛthivī-kṣaya-kārakambrings ruin to the earth;
किम् चित् एव निमित्तम् चkim cit eva nimittam caand [any] small pretext
भवति अत्र क्षय-आवहम्bhavati atra kṣaya-āvahammay here prove to bring devastation;
एतत् संचिन्त्य राज-इन्द्रetat saṃcintya rāja-indrahaving considered this, O lord of kings,
यत् क्षमम् तत् समाचरyat kṣamam tat samācarado what is fitting;
अप्रमत्त-उत्थितः नित्यम्apramatta-utthitaḥ nityamvigilant, ever active,
चातुर्-वर्ण्यस्य रक्षणेcātur-varṇyasya rakṣaṇein the protection of the four orders;
भव एधस्व मोदस्वbhava edhasva modasvabe [good], prosper, rejoice,
दानैः तर्पय च द्विजान्dānaiḥ tarpaya ca dvijānand gratify the brahmins with gifts;

Here, amid the encouragement to sacrifice, a grim forewarning sounds: 'a war bringing ruin to the earth.' It is telling that the scripture already darkens the coming triumph with the shadow of Kurukshetra: Yudhishthira's Rajasuya will become the seed of the great war. Thus dharma calls to greatness while warning of its price, not concealing that even a righteous deed brings sorrow. Thus the scripture sows the seed of the coming tragedy; and Narada takes his leave.
