राजर्षिभिर् अदृश्यद्भिर् ऋषिभिश् च महासुरौ ॥
उभौ विनिश्चयं कृत्वा विकुर्वाते वधैषिणौ ॥
प्रभिन्नकरटौ मत्तौ भूत्वा कुञ्जररूपिणौ ॥
संलीनान् अपि दुर्गेषु निन्यतुर् यमसादनम् ॥
सिंहौ भूत्वा पुनर् व्याघ्रौ पुनश् चान्तर्हिताव् उभौ ॥
तैस् तैर् उपायैस् तौ क्रूराव् ऋषीन् दृष्ट्वा निजघ्नतुः ॥
rājarṣibhir adṛśyadbhir ṛṣibhiś ca mahāsurau ||
ubhau viniścayaṃ kṛtvā vikurvāte vadhaiṣiṇau ||
prabhinnakaraṭau mattau bhūtvā kuñjararūpiṇau ||
saṃlīnān api durgeṣu ninyatur yamasādanam ||
siṃhau bhūtvā punar vyāghrau punaś cāntarhitāv ubhau ||
tais tair upāyais tau krūrāv ṛṣīn dṛṣṭvā nijaghnatuḥ ||
"When the royal seers and the other seers had vanished from sight, the two great asuras, both resolved and craving slaughter, transformed themselves: becoming frenzied elephants with temples split open, they sent even those hidden away in strongholds to the abode of Yama; turning into lions, then tigers again, then both invisible once more, by these and other means those cruel brothers slew every seer they caught sight of."

Here evil, shifting its shape, leaves the righteous no refuge. It is telling that the brothers, changing form, hunt down those in hiding: malice on the chase is inventive and relentless. Here is seen the truth that violence intoxicated by impunity descends into savagery. Thus the scripture shows the fury of the asuras; and it seems as though righteousness has nowhere left to hide — yet their judgment is near.
