आनुपूर्व्येण तीर्थानि दृष्टवान् कुरुसत्तमः ॥
नदीं चोत्पलिनीं रम्याम् अरण्यं नैमिषं प्रति ॥
नन्दाम् अपरनन्दां च कौशिकीं च यशस्विनीम् ॥
महानदीं गयां चैव गङ्गाम् अपि च भारत ॥
एवं सर्वाणि तीर्थानि पश्यमानस् तथाश्रमान् ॥
आत्मनः पावनं कुर्वन् ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ वसु ॥
ānupūrvyeṇa tīrthāni dṛṣṭavān kurusattamaḥ ||
nadīṃ cotpalinīṃ ramyām araṇyaṃ naimiṣaṃ prati ||
nandām aparanandāṃ ca kauśikīṃ ca yaśasvinīm ||
mahānadīṃ gayāṃ caiva gaṅgām api ca bhārata ||
evaṃ sarvāṇi tīrthāni paśyamānas tathāśramān ||
ātmanaḥ pāvanaṃ kurvan brāhmaṇebhyo dadau vasu ||
"In due order the best of the Kurus beheld the tirthas, and the lovely river Utpalini, going toward the Naimisha forest, Nanda and Aparananda, and the renowned Kaushiki, the Mahanadi and Gaya, and the Ganga too; thus beholding all the tirthas and the hermitages, working his own purification, he gave wealth to the brahmins."

Here pilgrimage and charity go hand in hand. It is significant that Arjuna accompanies every tirtha with giving: visiting the shrines is sanctified by generosity. Tirtha-yatra [pilgrimage] and dana together purify the pilgrim. Thus scripture shows the pious custom of pilgrimage; and Arjuna multiplies his merit at every holy place.
