स कलिङ्गान् अतिक्रम्य देशान् आयतनानि च ॥
धर्म्याणि रमणीयानि प्रेक्षमाणो ययौ प्रभुः ॥
महेन्द्रपर्वतं दृष्ट्वा तापसैर् उपशोभितम् ॥
समुद्रतीरेण शनैर् मणलूरं जगाम ह ॥

dharmyāṇi ramaṇīyāni prekṣamāṇo yayau prabhuḥ ||
mahendraparvataṃ dṛṣṭvā tāpasair upaśobhitam ||

Translation
"He, having passed beyond the Kalingas, their lands and shrines, beholding the holy and lovely places, journeyed on, the lord; having seen Mount Mahendra, adorned with ascetics, he slowly made his way along the seashore to Manipura."

Here the mountain is beautiful not for its stone but for the ascetics upon it. It is significant that Mahendra is "adorned with ascetics": holy men are the true splendor of a place. The presence of tapasvins sanctifies and adorns the land. Thus scripture shows the sanctity of Mahendra; and Arjuna's path brings him on to Manipura.
