तेषाम् अण्डानि सर्वेषां भक्षयाम् आस पापकृत् ॥
स हंसः संप्रमत्तानाम् अप्रमत्तः स्वकर्मणि ॥
ततः प्रक्षीयमाणेषु तेष्व् अण्डेष्व् अण्डजो ऽपरः ॥
अशङ्कत महाप्राज्ञस् तं कदा चिद् ददर्श ह ॥
ततः स कथयाम् आस दृष्ट्वा हंसस्य किल्बिषम् ॥
तेषां परमदुःखार्तः स पक्षी सर्वपक्षिणाम् ॥
ततः प्रत्यक्षतो दृष्ट्वा पक्षिणस् ते समागताः ॥
निजघ्नुस् तं तदा हंसं मिथ्यावृत्तं कुरूद्वह ॥

teṣām aṇḍāni sarveṣāṃ bhakṣayām āsa pāpakṛt ||
sa haṃsaḥ saṃpramattānām apramattaḥ svakarmaṇi ||
tataḥ prakṣīyamāṇeṣu teṣv aṇḍeṣv aṇḍajo 'paraḥ ||
aśaṅkata mahāprājñas taṃ kadā cid dadarśa ha ||
tataḥ sa kathayām āsa dṛṣṭvā haṃsasya kilbiṣam ||
teṣāṃ paramaduḥkhārtaḥ sa pakṣī sarvapakṣiṇām ||
tataḥ pratyakṣato dṛṣṭvā pakṣiṇas te samāgatāḥ ||
nijaghnus taṃ tadā haṃsaṃ mithyāvṛttaṃ kurūdvaha ||

ततः स कथयाम् आसtataḥ sa kathayām āsathen he told,
दृष्ट्वा हंसस्य किल्बिषम्dṛṣṭvā haṃsasya kilbiṣamhaving seen the swan's misdeed,
तेषां परम-दुःख-आर्तःteṣāṃ parama-duḥkha-ārtaḥdeeply grieved, [that] to them,
स पक्षी सर्व-पक्षिणाम्sa pakṣī sarva-pakṣiṇāmthat bird — to all the birds;
ततः प्रत्यक्षतो दृष्ट्वाtataḥ pratyakṣato dṛṣṭvāthen, having seen it with their own eyes,
पक्षिणस् ते समागताःpakṣiṇas te samāgatāḥthe birds, gathering together,
निजघ्नुस् तं तदा हंसंnijaghnus taṃ tadā haṃsaṃkilled that swan,

Translation

"That swan, untiring in his [wicked] business among the unwary [birds], devoured the eggs of them all, the evildoer. But when those eggs began to dwindle, another egg-born one, most wise, grew suspicious and once saw him [at it]. Then he, having seen the swan's misdeed, deeply grieved, told it to all the birds. And, having seen it with their own eyes, the birds, gathering together, killed that swan, who had acted deceitfully, O upholder of the Kurus."
