वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः प्रायाद् विदुरो ऽश्वैर् उदारैर्; महाजवैर् बलिभिः साधुदान्तैः ॥
बलान् नियुक्तो धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा; मनीषिणां पाण्डवानां सकाशम् ॥
सो ऽभिपत्य तदध्वानम् आसाद्य नृपतेः पुरम् ॥
प्रविवेश महाबुद्धिः पूज्यमानो द्विजातिभिः ॥
स राजगृहम् आसाद्य कुबेरभवनोपमम् ॥
अभ्यगच्छत धर्मात्मा धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥

tataḥ prāyād viduro 'śvair udārair; mahājavair balibhiḥ sādhudāntaiḥ ||
balān niyukto dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā; manīṣiṇāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ sakāśam ||
so 'bhipatya tadadhvānam āsādya nṛpateḥ puram ||
praviveśa mahābuddhiḥ pūjyamāno dvijātibhiḥ ||
sa rājagṛham āsādya kuberabhavanopamam ||
abhyagacchata dharmātmā dharmaputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ||
Then Vidura, compelled by the will of King Dhritarashtra, set out on excellent horses—very swift, powerful, and well-trained—toward the wise Pandavas. Having traveled the road and reached the king's city, the great-minded one entered it, honored by the twice-born. Reaching the royal palace, resembling the abode of Kubera, the righteous one came before the son of Dharma, Yudhishthira.

Vidura travels 'compelled by force'—a messenger against his own will. It is telling that the wise man carries out an order he condemns: he places obedience to his elder above his own disagreement, yet does not conceal that disagreement. The verse teaches that obedience does not require approval: one can go where one is sent while remaining, in the heart, opposed to wrongdoing. Here appears the hard lot of the honest servant—to carry a message whose harm he foresees, without the power to avert it. And the very swiftness of the horses carrying him toward calamity underscores the powerlessness of truth before a resolved will: he hastens to fulfill what his whole heart does not wish.
