संग्रामे निघ्नतः शत्रूञ् शरौघैर् विमलैर् अहम् ॥
अग्रतो लक्षये यान्तं पुरुषं पावकप्रभम् ॥
ज्वलन्तं शूलम् उद्यम्य यां दिशं प्रतिपद्यते ॥
तस्यां दिशि विशीर्यन्ते शत्रवो मे महामुने ॥
न पद्भ्यां स्पृशते भूमिं न च शूलं विमुञ्चति ॥
शूलाच् छूलसहस्राणि निष्पेतुस् तस्य तेजसा ॥

saṃgrāme nighnataḥ śatrūñ śaraughair vimalair aham ||
agrato lakṣaye yāntaṃ puruṣaṃ pāvakaprabham ||
jvalantaṃ śūlam udyamya yāṃ diśaṃ pratipadyate ||
tasyāṃ diśi viśīryante śatravo me mahāmune ||
na padbhyāṃ spṛśate bhūmiṃ na ca śūlaṃ vimuñcati ||
śūlāc chūlasahasrāṇi niṣpetus tasya tejasā ||

Translation

[Arjuna said:] "In battle, as I strike down enemies with streams of pure arrows, I notice ahead of me a man going, fire-radiant. Having raised a blazing trident, in whatever direction he turns, in that direction my enemies scatter and perish, O great sage. His feet do not touch the ground, and he does not let go of the trident; from that trident thousands of tridents burst forth by his splendor."
