कपर्दिने करालाय हर्यक्ष्णे वरदाय च ॥
याम्यायाव्यक्तकेशाय सद्वृत्ते शंकराय च ॥
काम्याय हरिनेत्राय स्थाणवे पुरुषाय च ॥
हरिकेशाय मुण्डाय कृशायोत्तरणाय च ॥
भास्कराय सुतीर्थाय देवदेवाय रंहसे ॥
बहुरूपाय शर्वाय प्रियाय प्रियवाससे ॥
kapardine karālāya haryakṣṇe varadāya ca ||
yāmyāyāvyaktakeśāya sadvṛtte śaṃkarāya ca ||
kāmyāya harinetrāya sthāṇave puruṣāya ca ||
harikeśāya muṇḍāya kṛśāyottaraṇāya ca ||
bhāskarāya sutīrthāya devadevāya raṃhase ||
bahurūpāya śarvāya priyāya priyavāsase ||
"[Homage] to the one wearing the topknot [a coil of hair], the terrible, yellow-eyed, and the giver of boons; the one connected with Yama, of unseen [hidden] locks, of good conduct, and to Shankara. To the desirable, green-eyed one, to Sthanu [the pillar], and to Purusha; green-haired, bald-headed, gaunt, and the one who carries across [beyond]. To the sun-radiant one, the good ford [tirtha], the god of gods, the swift one; of many forms, to Sharva, dear one, in dear garments."

This litany of names manifests the fullness of the one God: the terrible and the dear, the fearsome and the benign meet in a single deity. It is telling that "terrible" and "dear," "deliverer" and "one who ferries across" stand side by side: the highest embraces opposites. The verse teaches that God's many names are a sign of his inexhaustibility; and the stringing together of names is not an empty listing but prayerful contemplation of the One who surpasses every single definition.
