यदा त्रीणि समेतानि अन्तरिक्षे पुराणि वै ॥
त्रिपर्वणा त्रिशल्येन तेन तानि बिभेद सः ॥
पुराणि न च तं शेकुर् दानवाः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥
शरं कालाग्निसंयुक्तं विष्णुसोमसमायुतम् ॥
बालम् अङ्कगतं कृत्वा स्वयं पञ्चशिखं पुनः ॥
उमा जिज्ञासमाना वै को ऽयम् इत्य् अब्रवीत् सुरान् ॥
yadā trīṇi sametāni antarikṣe purāṇi vai ||
triparvaṇā triśalyena tena tāni bibheda saḥ ||
purāṇi na ca taṃ śekur dānavāḥ prativīkṣitum ||
śaraṃ kālāgnisaṃyuktaṃ viṣṇusomasamāyutam ||
bālam aṅkagataṃ kṛtvā svayaṃ pañcaśikhaṃ punaḥ ||
umā jijñāsamānā vai ko 'yam ity abravīt surān ||
"When the three cities had come together in the sky, with the three-jointed, three-barbed arrow he pierced them. The cities [and] the danavas could not even look upon him — upon the arrow joined with the fire of Kala, furnished with Vishnu and Soma. Having set the child upon his lap, he [Shiva] himself, five-crested once more... Uma, wishing to know, asked the gods, 'Who is this?'"

Rudra pierces the three converging cities with a single arrow in which Kala, Vishnu, and Soma are joined together: the Supreme acts with the combined might of the divine. It is significant that the danavas could not even look upon this arrow — their destruction was sealed by its very appearance. The verse teaches that when the powers of the Supreme converge into a single instrument, resistance is futile; and victory over the impregnable is not the work of many means but of one blow, consecrated from above.
