एकाक्षो जाज्वलन्न् आस्ते सर्वतोक्षिमयो ऽपि वा ॥
क्रोधाद् यश् चाविशल् लोकांस् तस्माच् छर्व इति स्मृतः ॥
धूम्रं रूपं च यत् तस्य धूर्जटिस् तेन उच्यते ॥
विश्वे देवाश् च यत् तस्मिन् विश्वरूपस् ततः स्मृतः ॥
तिस्रो देवीर् यदा चैव भजते भुवनेश्वरः ॥
द्याम् अपः पृथिवीं चैव त्र्यम्बकश् च ततः स्मृतः ॥
ekākṣo jājvalann āste sarvatokṣimayo 'pi vā ||
krodhād yaś cāviśal lokāṃs tasmāc charva iti smṛtaḥ ||
dhūmraṃ rūpaṃ ca yat tasya dhūrjaṭis tena ucyate ||
viśve devāś ca yat tasmin viśvarūpas tataḥ smṛtaḥ ||
tisro devīr yadā caiva bhajate bhuvaneśvaraḥ ||
dyām apaḥ pṛthivīṃ caiva tryambakaś ca tataḥ smṛtaḥ ||
"One-eyed, blazing, he abides, or wholly made of eyes; and since in wrath he pierced the worlds, therefore he is called Sharva. And his smoky form -- therefore he is called Dhurjati [of the smoky locks]. And since all the gods are in him, therefore he is called Vishvarupa [the all-formed]. When the lord of the worlds takes [as consorts] three goddesses -- heaven, the waters, and the earth -- therefore he is called Tryambaka."

The names 'Sharva,' 'Dhurjati,' 'Vishvarupa,' 'Tryambaka' are explained through his deeds and essence: the all-piercing one, the smoky-locked one, the all-formed one, the lord of the three spheres. It is significant that the 'three goddesses' are interpreted as heaven, waters, and earth -- his consorts are the worlds themselves. The verse teaches that the names of the holy one are condensed accounts of him; and unfolding their meaning, the mind beholds the majesty that a brief name only sketches.
