बहुभिर् बहुधा रूपैर् विश्वं व्याप्नोति वै जगत् ॥
अस्य देवस्य यद् वक्त्रं समुद्रे तद् अतिष्ठत ॥
एष चैव श्मशानेषु देवो वसति नित्यशः ॥
यजन्त्य् एनं जनास् तत्र वीरस्थान इतीश्वरम् ॥
अस्य दीप्तानि रूपाणि घोराणि च बहूनि च ॥
लोके यान्य् अस्य कुर्वन्ति मनुष्याः प्रवदन्ति च ॥
bahubhir bahudhā rūpair viśvaṃ vyāpnoti vai jagat ||
asya devasya yad vaktraṃ samudre tad atiṣṭhata ||
eṣa caiva śmaśāneṣu devo vasati nityaśaḥ ||
yajanty enaṃ janās tatra vīrasthāna itīśvaram ||
asya dīptāni rūpāṇi ghorāṇi ca bahūni ca ||
loke yāny asya kurvanti manuṣyāḥ pravadanti ca ||
"With many, manifold forms he pervades the universe, the [whole] world; this god's face that dwelt in the ocean [the subterranean fire Vadavamukha]. This same god dwells always at the cremation grounds [shmashana]; people worship him there as Ishvara, the 'abode of heroes.' His blazing forms, terrible and many, in the world -- such [images] people make of him and proclaim."

The Supreme pervades everything -- his face is in the ocean's fire and in the places of cremation, where people worship him as the 'abode of heroes.' It is significant that God dwells even where only decay and terror are ordinarily seen: there is no place left untouched by him. The verse teaches that the Supreme is present both in the terrible and in the shunned -- even the cremation ground is his abode; and one who perceives God everywhere fears neither death nor its places, for he sees the Lord's face there too.
