Then Subhadra, dear sister of Keshava, bore a son, as Indrani bore Jayanta: long-armed, of great vigor, bull-eyed, subduer of foes — the hero Abhimanyu, bull among men; fearless and wrathful toward foes, that crusher of enemies — they call him "Abhimanyu," son of Arjuna; that supreme charioteer was born to Subhadra by Dhananjaya, as fire is born from the womb of the shami tree at a sacrifice.

Here is born a hero, glorious through his kinship with the Lord. It is telling that Abhimanyu is the son of Krishna's sister and of Arjuna: in him two blessed lineages meet. Telling too is the name "Fearless-and-Wrathful [toward foes]": the name foretells his valor. Here is the birth of a great hero by grace from above. Thus the scripture shows the coming of Abhimanyu, and the comparison to sacrificial fire marks his sacred might.
