वैशंपायन उवाच
अनुज्ञातस् तु कृष्णेन पाण्डवो भ्रातृभिः सह ॥
ईहितुं राजसूयाय साधनान्य् उपचक्रमे ॥
तत आज्ञापयाम् आस पाण्डवो ऽरिनिबर्हणः ॥
सहदेवं युधां श्रेष्ठं मन्त्रिणश् चैव सर्वशः ॥
अस्मिन् क्रतौ यथोक्तानि यज्ञाङ्गानि द्विजातिभिः ॥
तथोपकरणं सर्वं मङ्गलानि च सर्वशः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
anujñātas tu kṛṣṇena pāṇḍavo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ||
īhituṃ rājasūyāya sādhanāny upacakrame ||
tata ājñāpayām āsa pāṇḍavo 'rinibarhaṇaḥ ||
sahadevaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ mantriṇaś caiva sarvaśaḥ ||
asmin kratau yathoktāni yajñāṅgāni dvijātibhiḥ ||
tathopakaraṇaṃ sarvaṃ maṅgalāni ca sarvaśaḥ ||
Permitted by Krishna, the Pandava, together with his brothers, began preparing the means for the rajasuya. Then the Pandava, destroyer of foes, commanded Sahadeva, foremost of warriors, and all the counselors: "All the limbs of the sacrifice, as prescribed by the twice-born for this rite, and all the implements, and all the auspicious objects,"

Only "permitted by Krishna" does Yudhishthira proceed to the task: nothing begins before the Lord's consent. It is telling that the preparations are made strictly "as prescribed by the twice-born": the sacrifice is not the whim of pious impulse but exact adherence to tradition. The verse teaches the two pillars of sacred action — blessing from above and faithfulness to rule. Zeal without permission is presumptuous, and fervor without knowledge is blind; a perfect rite unites submission to the Lord's will with obedience to the ordinance of the learned, for holiness requires both heart and order.
