तम् अब्रवीन् महाराज धृष्टद्युम्नो वृकोदरम् ॥
ईप्सितेन महाबाहो गच्छ पार्थाविचारयन् ॥
नाहत्वा समरे द्रोणो धृष्टद्युम्नं कथं चन ॥
निग्रहं धर्मराजस्य प्रकरिष्यति संयुगे ॥
ततो निक्षिप्य राजानं धृष्टद्युम्नाय पाण्डवः ॥
अभिवाद्य गुरुं ज्येष्ठं प्रययौ यत्र फल्गुनः ॥
परिष्वक्तस् तु कौन्तेयो धर्मराजेन भारत ॥
आघ्रातश् च तथा मूर्ध्नि श्रावितश् चाशिषः शुभाः ॥
tam abravīn mahārāja dhṛṣṭadyumno vṛkodaram ||
īpsitena mahābāho gaccha pārthāvicārayan ||
nāhatvā samare droṇo dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ kathaṃ cana ||
nigrahaṃ dharmarājasya prakariṣyati saṃyuge ||
tato nikṣipya rājānaṃ dhṛṣṭadyumnāya pāṇḍavaḥ ||
abhivādya guruṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ prayayau yatra phalgunaḥ ||
pariṣvaktas tu kaunteyo dharmarājena bhārata ||
āghrātaś ca tathā mūrdhni śrāvitaś cāśiṣaḥ śubhāḥ ||
He said to Vrikodara, O great king, Dhrishtadyumna: "Go, Partha, as you wish, without hesitation; without slaying me in battle, Drona will by no means accomplish the capture of the King of Dharma in battle." Then, having entrusted the king to Dhrishtadyumna, that Pandava, having honored the elder teacher [Yudhishthira], set out to where Phalguna was.

Dhrishtadyumna pledges himself as surety: "without slaying me, Drona will by no means accomplish" the seizure of the king. Thus one man shields what matters most while releasing the other. It is telling that mutual pledging upholds the whole undertaking. The verse teaches that shared service rests on each one's guarantee of his own charge: where one firmly takes the guarding upon himself, the other goes to his own feat with an untroubled heart, and trust binds them tighter than any formation.
