अथोद्भ्राम्य गदां भीमः कालदण्डम् इवान्तकः ॥
द्रोणायावसृजद् राजन् स रथाद् अवपुप्लुवे ॥
साश्वसूतध्वजं यानं द्रोणस्यापोथयत् तदा ॥
प्रामृद्नाच् च बहून् योधान् वायुर् वृक्षान् इवौजसा ॥
तं पुनः परिवव्रुस् ते तव पुत्रा रथोत्तमम् ॥
अन्यं च रथम् आस्थाय द्रोणः प्रहरतां वरः ॥
athodbhrāmya gadāṃ bhīmaḥ kāladaṇḍam ivāntakaḥ ||
droṇāyāvasṛjad rājan sa rathād avapupluve ||
sāśvasūtadhvajaṃ yānaṃ droṇasyāpothayat tadā ||
prāmṛdnāc ca bahūn yodhān vāyur vṛkṣān ivaujasā ||
taṃ punaḥ parivavrus te tava putrā rathottamam ||
anyaṃ ca ratham āsthāya droṇaḥ praharatāṃ varaḥ ||
Then, having whirled his mace, Bhima, like the rod of Time, as Death [Yama], hurled it at Drona, O king; he leapt down from his chariot. It smashed then Drona's car with its horses, charioteer, and banner, and crushed many warriors, as the wind [fells] trees, by its force. Your sons surrounded him again, the finest warrior; and Drona, the foremost of strikers, mounted another chariot.

Bhima's mace, "like Death -- the rod of Time," smashes Drona's chariot: the wrath of dishonored love is terrible. It is telling that Bhima does not slay the one who has leapt down, but shatters only his chariot. The verse teaches that even in fury the noble keep measure: his wrath falls upon the enemy's weapon and chariot, not treacherously upon the unarmed -- for valor does not lose its honor even in strife with a fallen teacher.
