Then Bhima, having heard that word of the teacher, fearless, enraged, said to Drona, with copper-crimson eyes, breathing hard: "Not with your permission, Arjuna, O degenerate brahmin, entered the field of battle -- for he, unconquerable, would enter even Indra's army. I am not Arjuna, the compassionate one, Drona -- I am Bhimasena, your enemy! You are our father, teacher, kinsman, and thus we are your sons -- so we all consider, standing bowed down to you. Now the opposite is seen in you."

Bhima calls Drona "brahmabandhu" -- degenerate brahmin, a brahmin fallen to the trade of war and gain. And yet he still recalls: "you are our father, teacher, kinsman" -- we honored you as sons. It is telling that the rebuke is born of trampled reverence. The verse teaches that no enmity is more bitter than with one who ought to be honored: when a teacher called to a higher calling becomes an enemy for an unrighteous cause, the disciple grieves for the fall of one to whom he bowed -- and his anger is the reverse face of a love that has been dishonored.
