अथ कस्मादुच्यते महाविष्णुमिति । यस्मात्स्वमहिम्ना सर्वांल्लोकान्सर्वान्देवान्सर्वानात्मनः सर्वाणि भूतानि व्याप्नोति व्यापयति स्नेहो यथा पललपिण्डं शान्तमूलमोतं प्रोतमनुव्यासं व्यतिषिक्तो व्यापयते । यस्मान्न जातः परो अन्यो अस्ति य आविवेश भुवनानि विश्वा । प्रजापतिः प्रजया संविदानः त्रीणि ज्योतींषि सचते स षोडषीं तस्मादुच्यते महाविष्णुमिति

अनुवाद

“And why is he called ‘mahāviṣṇu’?” — “Because by his own greatness he pervades all worlds, all gods, all beings and makes them pervaded — as oil pervades a lump of sesame: woven warp and woof, threaded through and interlaced. ‘For there is not born another higher than he — the one who entered all the worlds; Prajāpati, at one with his offspring, keeps to the three lights: he is the sixteenth.’ Therefore he is called ‘mahāviṣṇu’.”

भाष्य

The third word is mahāviṣṇu, and here the etymology at last agrees with the dictionary: viṣṇu is from the root viś, “to enter”, or vyāp, “to pervade”.

And a comparison is given, familiar to us from the thirty-fifth section of the Atharvaśiras: sneho yathā palala-piṇḍam — “as oil pervades a lump of sesame”.

There it explained why the syllable Oṁ is called all-pervading; here — why Viṣṇu is called Viṣṇu. The sesame cake is soaked through with its own oil, and the two cannot be parted.

Then — otam protam, “woven warp and woof”: the cloth image from the Bṛhadāraṇyaka, where Yājñavalkya was asked on what all is woven.

The verse from the Ṛg-veda adds two turns worth pausing on.

The first: na jātaḥ paro anyo asti — “there is not born another higher than he”. This is a direct assertion of primacy, and Vaiṣṇava Vedānta leans on such places constantly.

The second: ṣoḍaśin, “the sixteenth”. The Puruṣa in these hymns has sixteen parts — fifteen changeable and the sixteenth unchanging. The Praśna Upaniṣad examines this at length.

That is, He is named not the first of the parts, but the one beyond the fifteen.
