The twenty-third name is Manu, the forefather of men.
From his name comes manuṣya, “man”: men are “Manu's”, the descendants of Manu. By his name too is called the chief of the dharma-śāstras.
Tradition remembers him as the one whom the fish led through the flood.
Note that this is the only human name in the litany. All the rest are gods, goddesses, elements, classes, abstract principles; and in their midst — the first man.
The neighbourhood is telling in another way too. To the left of Manu stands time, to the right — death. That is, man is named between what carries him and what ends him.
The book does not explain this; but the place is so chosen that nothing needs explaining.
