The third fruit, and it is of another class already: stambhana, “stopping”.
This is one of the six acts enumerated by the science of mantras: pacification, subjugation, stopping, discord, expulsion, slaying. Stopping is that by which an action is arrested — of fire, of poison, of an army, of a star.
The list is deliberately wide: fire, wind, the sun, water, the gods, the planets, poison.
I will say plainly how to read this.
The book is not ashamed that the mantra is used for worldly needs as well, and does not pretend that people come to it only for liberation. We noted the same sobriety in the fourth Upaniṣad of the pūrva-tāpanī of the Rāma-tāpanī, where the rite of “slaying the seizure” stood at the edge of the diagram.
But note where this is placed. Not at the beginning, but in the middle of the nine paragraphs on the fruits; and after it will come the worlds, the sacrifices, the Vedas, and at the very end — that from which there is no returning.
Power is set in the middle, not at the summit.
