वार्यमाणः स कृष्णेन पार्थेन च महात्मना ॥
भीमेन चक्ररक्षाभ्याम् अश्वत्थाम्ना कृपेण च ॥
कर्णेन वृषसेनेन सैन्धवेन तथैव च ॥
विक्रोशतां च सैन्यानाम् अवधीत् तं यतव्रतम् ॥
प्रायोपविष्टाय रणे पार्थेन छिन्नबाहवे ॥
सात्यकिः कौरवेन्द्राय खड्गेनापाहरच् छिरः ॥
vāryamāṇaḥ sa kṛṣṇena pārthena ca mahātmanā ||
bhīmena cakrarakṣābhyām aśvatthāmnā kṛpeṇa ca ||
karṇena vṛṣasenena saindhavena tathaiva ca ||
vikrośatāṃ ca sainyānām avadhīt taṃ yatavratam ||
prāyopaviṣṭāya raṇe pārthena chinnabāhave ||
sātyakiḥ kauravendrāya khaḍgenāpāharac chiraḥ ||
Though restrained by Krishna and by Partha, the great soul, by Bhima, by the two guardians of the wheel, by Ashvatthaman and Kripa, by Karna, by Vrishasena, and likewise by Saindhava, and amid the wailing armies — Satyaki killed him, faithful to his vow. From him seated in praya in battle, from him whose arm had been severed by Partha, the lord of Kuru, Satyaki struck off the head with his sword.

Foes and friends alike — Krishna, Arjuna, Bhima, Karna, Kripa — strain with one voice to hold Satyaki back: where both armies stand as one, there is little room to doubt where the right lies. It is telling that he still strikes off the head of one at prayer: blind vengeance is deaf even to unanimous rebuke. The verse teaches that when both one's own and one's enemies speak against a deed with a single voice, the deed is almost certainly wrong; and one who still will not listen thereby shows that he is ruled not by dharma but by an old, unhealed wound.
