[Satyaki said:] "'He must not be killed, he must not be killed' — this is what you keep telling me, you who speak of dharma while being yourselves most unrighteous, having put on the garb of dharma! When the boy, Subhadra's son [Abhimanyu], deprived of his weapons, was slain by you in battle — where did your dharma go then? And I vowed this, at some insult: that whoever, having crushed me in battle, should in rage strike me while I yet lived, with his foot..."

Satyaki turns the reproach back on his accusers with their own weapon: "you who speak of dharma — where was it when you killed the unarmed boy?" It is telling that he names it dharmakañcukam, the garb of dharma: he exposes the hypocrisy that cloaks an old wrong. The verse teaches that a rebuke is powerless in the mouth of one who shares the same guilt; yet a counter-accusation does not clean one's own deed either — two wrongs, each pointing at the other, only show how one injustice breeds another.
