तस्य ते पार्षदा दिव्या रूपैर् नानाविधैः विभोः ॥
वामना जटिला मुण्डा ह्रस्वग्रीवा महोदराः ॥
महाकाया महोत्साहा महाकर्णास् तथापरे ॥
आननैर् विकृतैः पादैः पार्थ वेषैश् च वैकृतैः ॥
ईदृशैः स महादेवः पूज्यमानो महेश्वरः ॥
स शिवस् तात तेजस्वी प्रसादाद् याति ते ऽग्रतः ॥
तस्मिन् घोरे तदा पार्थ संग्रामे लोमहर्षणे ॥
tasya te pārṣadā divyā rūpair nānāvidhaiḥ vibhoḥ ||
vāmanā jaṭilā muṇḍā hrasvagrīvā mahodarāḥ ||
mahākāyā mahotsāhā mahākarṇās tathāpare ||
ānanair vikṛtaiḥ pādaiḥ pārtha veṣaiś ca vaikṛtaiḥ ||
īdṛśaiḥ sa mahādevaḥ pūjyamāno maheśvaraḥ ||
sa śivas tāta tejasvī prasādād yāti te 'grataḥ ||
tasmin ghore tadā pārtha saṃgrāme lomaharṣaṇe ||
"His retinue is divine, of manifold forms, this mighty one's: dwarfs, matted-haired, bald-headed, short-necked, big-bellied, huge-bodied, immensely zealous, big-eared, and others still — with distorted faces, [distorted] feet, O Partha, and grotesque garments. With such [companions] that Mahadeva is worshipped, Maheshvara — that Shiva, dear one, radiant, by his grace walked before you in that terrible battle, then, O Partha, that made the hair stand on end."

Mahadeva's retinue is varied and strange — dwarfs, shaggy-haired ones, beings of wondrous form: before the highest there is no distinction of appearance. It is telling that the fearsome god is surrounded not by polished splendor but by the plain and unremarkable — he is honored by all, without discrimination. The verse teaches that greatness does not disdain the lowly and unsightly; the One who accepts worship even from the grotesque and unnoticed shows that his grace looks not at outward form but bows to devotion.
