विषमस्थः शरीरेषु समश् च प्राणिनाम् इह ॥
स वायुर् विषमस्थेषु प्राणापानशरीरिषु ॥
पूजयेद् विग्रहं यस् तु लिङ्गं वापि समर्चयेत् ॥
लिङ्गं पूजयिता नित्यं महतीं श्रियम् अश्नुते ॥
ऊरुभ्याम् अर्धम् आग्नेयं सोमार्धं च शिवा तनुः ॥
आत्मनो ऽर्धं च तस्याग्निः सोमो ऽर्धं पुनर् उच्यते ॥
viṣamasthaḥ śarīreṣu samaś ca prāṇinām iha ||
sa vāyur viṣamastheṣu prāṇāpānaśarīriṣu ||
pūjayed vigrahaṃ yas tu liṅgaṃ vāpi samarcayet ||
liṅgaṃ pūjayitā nityaṃ mahatīṃ śriyam aśnute ||
ūrubhyām ardham āgneyaṃ somārdhaṃ ca śivā tanuḥ ||
ātmano 'rdhaṃ ca tasyāgniḥ somo 'rdhaṃ punar ucyate ||
"Though dwelling unequally in bodies, he is equal among living beings here; he is the wind [vayu] in those unequally abiding, in bodies with prana and apana. Whoever would worship the image [murti], or would honor the linga -- one who ever worships the linga attains great prosperity [shri]. From the thighs, half his body is fiery, and half is lunar, the benign [Shiva] body; half of him is Agni, half is again called Soma."

God dwells in all bodies as the breath-wind -- unequal in different beings, yet one in essence; and his body is half fire, half moon. It is significant that Agni and Soma are joined here -- heat and coolness, consuming and nourishing: in him the opposing principles are balanced. The verse teaches that the Supreme upholds the world by uniting opposing forces; and one who worships his image partakes of this harmony, attaining fullness of good.
