अन्धाश् च तमसा लोका न प्रकाशन्त संवृताः ॥
जघ्निवान् सह सूर्येण सर्वेषां ज्योतिषां प्रभाः ॥
चुक्रुशुर् भयभीताश् च शान्तिं चक्रुस् तथैव च ॥
ऋषयः सर्वभूतानाम् आत्मनश् च सुखैषिणः ॥
पूषाणम् अभ्यद्रवत शंकरः प्रहसन्न् इव ॥
पुरोडाशं भक्षयतो दशनान् वै व्यशातयत् ॥
andhāś ca tamasā lokā na prakāśanta saṃvṛtāḥ ||
jaghnivān saha sūryeṇa sarveṣāṃ jyotiṣāṃ prabhāḥ ||
cukruśur bhayabhītāś ca śāntiṃ cakrus tathaiva ca ||
ṛṣayaḥ sarvabhūtānām ātmanaś ca sukhaiṣiṇaḥ ||
pūṣāṇam abhyadravata śaṃkaraḥ prahasann iva ||
puroḍāśaṃ bhakṣayato daśanān vai vyaśātayat ||
"And the worlds, blinded by darkness, did not shine, shrouded [as they were]; he extinguished, together with the sun, the radiance of all the luminaries. The rishis, seized with fear, cried out, and likewise performed the rite of appeasement [shanti], seeking good for all beings and for themselves. Shankara fell upon Pushan, as though laughing, and knocked out the teeth of him who was eating the purodasha [sacrificial cake]."

The wrath of Rudra extinguishes even the light of the luminaries, and only the appeasement of the rishis calms the storm. It is significant that punishment falls upon Pushan for eating unbidden from a sacrifice from which Rudra had been excluded: the one who disregards what is due is visibly punished. The verse teaches that the world is restored not by resisting the wrath of the Supreme but by appeasing it; and a rite performed without honor to God brings ruin upon its very participants — a lesson in the inescapability of due reverence.
