ते तम् ऊचुर् महात्मानं सर्वे देवाः सवासवाः ॥
रुद्र रौद्रा भविष्यन्ति पशवः सर्वकर्मसु ॥
निपातयिष्यसे चैनान् असुरान् भुवनेश्वर ॥
स तथोक्तस् तथेत्य् उक्त्वा देवानां हितकाम्यया ॥
अतिष्ठत् स्थाणुभूतः स सहस्रं परिवत्सरान् ॥
te tam ūcur mahātmānaṃ sarve devāḥ savāsavāḥ ||
rudra raudrā bhaviṣyanti paśavaḥ sarvakarmasu ||
nipātayiṣyase cainān asurān bhuvaneśvara ||
sa tathoktas tathety uktvā devānāṃ hitakāmyayā ||
atiṣṭhat sthāṇubhūtaḥ sa sahasraṃ parivatsarān ||
"All the gods together with Vasava said to him, the great soul: 'Rudra, [sacrificial] creatures [pashu] in all rites shall be [yours]; and you shall cast down these asuras, O lord of the worlds.' He, thus addressed, having said 'so be it,' stood motionless, become Sthanu, for the good of the gods, for a thousand years."

The gods promise Rudra a share of the sacrificial creatures, and for their good he becomes motionless as Sthanu for a thousand years, preparing the blow. Significant here is the long patience of the Supreme: even the all-powerful does not hasten, awaiting the appointed hour. The verse teaches that even the greatest might acts in its own time, not on a whim; and Rudra's motionless concentration shows that behind a fearsome deed stands measure and patient preparation, not impulse.
