उग्रायुधाय देवाय नमः सुरवराय च ॥

"To the god with fearsome weapons, homage, and to the best of the gods; homage be to the many-formed one, and homage to the many-bowed one. Homage be to Sthanu always, to him of good vows, with a beautiful bow; homage be to the destroyer of Tripura, and to him who struck down Bhaga — homage. To the lord of the forest trees, to the lord of men — homage; and to the lord of the waters always, to the lord of sacrifices — homage. To the destroyer of Pushan's teeth, to the three-eyed one, and the giver of boons; to the blue-throated, the tawny one, to the golden-haired — homage."

This litany joins the names of fearsome deeds — "destroyer of Tripura," "he who struck down Bhaga," "destroyer of Pushan's teeth" — with the names of the lord of all that exists. It is significant that these fearsome exploits are woven into the praise alongside the benevolent ones: destruction in the hands of the Supreme serves order. The verse teaches that even the fearsome deeds of God are not arbitrary but part of the world's ordering; and worship embraces them, discerning behind punishment — justice, and behind destruction — renewal.
