स्रुवहस्ताय देवाय धन्विने भार्गवाय च ॥
बहुरूपाय विश्वस्य पतये चीरवाससे ॥
सहस्रशिरसे चैव सहस्रनयनाय च ॥
सहस्रबाहवे चैव सहस्रचरणाय च ॥
शरणं प्राप्य कौन्तेय वरदं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥
उमापतिं विरूपाक्षं दक्षयज्ञनिबर्हणम् ॥
प्रजानां पतिम् अव्यग्रं भूतानां पतिम् अव्ययम् ॥

"To the god with the sacrificial ladle in hand, the archer, and to Bhargava; of many forms, lord of the universe, clad in bark garments. And to the thousand-headed, and to the thousand-eyed, and to the thousand-armed, and to the thousand-footed. Having attained refuge, O son of Kunti, in the boon-giver, lord of the worlds, husband of Uma, Virupaksha [the three-eyed], destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, the undisturbed lord of creatures, the imperishable lord of beings."

The image of the "thousand-headed, thousand-eyed, thousand-armed" reveals a universal form — God as the very fabric of creation. It is telling that beside the sacrificial ladle [guardian of the rite] stands "the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice": the highest both establishes the rite and punishes a rite performed without devotion. The verse teaches that God embraces the whole of existence in a thousand forms; before the One who is both thousand-armed and undisturbed one should seek refuge — for in him are both might and unchanging peace.
