The ear — on the side of oneself, the heard — on the side of beings, and the quarters of space — on the side of deities; the channel — their bond. Who is in the ear, in the heard, in the quarters, in the channel, in the breath, in knowledge, in bliss, in the space of the heart, who moves within all this — He is this very Self. Him let one revere — the unageing, immortal, fearless, sorrowless, endless.

The second triad: the ear, the heard, and the quarters of space.
The deity here is unexpected — not some person, but the quarters of space themselves. Why they?
Because sound, unlike light, always comes from somewhere. The visible stands before the eyes; the audible has a direction — from the right, from behind, from above. Hearing is precisely the sense by which we learn where we are: with eyes shut, a man tells by sound whether the room is large and whether the window is open.
That is why the quarters are named the deity of hearing: they are what makes a sound a sound from somewhere.
In this the exactness of ancient observation is visible. The correspondences in this khaṇḍa are chosen not for beauty but for the substance of the matter: the sun for the eye, the directions for the ear, the earth for smell — each time is named that without which the sense would not work at all.
The rest is repeated word for word, and this repetition is a device. One who reads fourteen identical mantras in a row stops following the words and begins to hear one thing: in whatever you take — He.
