Into the anus enters that which sets in it; into the excreted enters that which sets in the excreted; into death enters that which sets in death; into Madhyamā enters that which sets in Madhyamā; into the shattering breath enters that which sets in it; into knowledge it enters; and into that immortal, fearless, sorrowless, endless, seedless — into it it enters. So he said.

The ninth step, and in it is the line for whose sake it was worth reading this far: “into death enters that which sets in death” — and all of it sets further, into knowledge and into the seedless.
Death here is named one of the steps. Not the end of the row, but a link: it itself receives what sets, and itself sets further.
This is the third time in the book that death is put in its place. In the first khaṇḍa it was created before the living. In the fifth it was given the deity-ship of excretion. In the seventh it was said that it too is the body of Him who moves within it and whom it does not know. Here the last thing is added: it too sets.
The breath's name is prabhañjana, “the shattering, the breaking”; so is a hurricane called as well. It is joined with excretion and with death, and the combination has come out whole: everything that breaks and carries out is gathered into one step.
And yet its conclusion differs in nothing from the conclusion about the eye and the tongue: the same immortal, fearless, sorrowless, endless, seedless. The Upaniṣad makes no special case for death.
