译文

Into the nose enters that which sets in the nose; into the smelled enters that which sets in the smelled; into the earth enters that which sets in the earth; into Jitā enters that which sets in Jitā; into the pervading breath enters that which sets in it; into knowledge it enters; and into that immortal, fearless, sorrowless, endless, seedless — into it it enters. So he said.

注释

The third step: the nose, the smelled, the earth, the channel Jitā, the pervading breath.

The channel's name here is telling: jitā means “conquered, subdued”. In the list of the sixth khaṇḍa it stood third.

Note the common construction of these mantras, which by the third repetition can already be heard. Each step is named twice: “into X enters that which sets in X”. The turn seems a tautology, but there is exactness in it.

It is not said “X disappears”, but “that which sets in X enters into it”. That is, setting and entering are one movement taken from two sides: from the side of what departs it is a setting; from the side of what receives it is an entering. Nothing is lost; it turns out to be received by that behind which it set.

Hence the whole khaṇḍa is not gloomy, though it speaks of vanishing. This is not the destruction of the world but its folding-up — the same that in the second khaṇḍa was called dissolution: the salt goes into the water and does not perish.
