«As in heaven the radiant Surya illumines with his splendor, so on earth King Samvarana shone with his brilliance; and as the knowers of Brahman worship the rising Aditya, so the subjects — who rank below the brahmins — honored Samvarana, O Partha. He surpassed Soma in loveliness, Aditya in radiance; he was a glorious king to friend and foe alike. To such a virtuous king, of such conduct, O Kaurava, Tapana himself resolved to give Tapati».

Here the worshipper comes to resemble the one he worships. It is telling how the comparison runs: Samvarana shines on earth as Surya shines in heaven, and the people honor him as they honor the rising sun; the devotee reflects the light of the one he serves. Here it is revealed that closeness to the divine transforms the devotee into its likeness: serving the light, one becomes luminous oneself. Thus the scripture shows that devotion not only is rewarded but also conforms the devotee to his deity; and Samvarana, in honoring Surya, himself became a sun among kings.
