वैशंपायन उवाच
तस्मै दित्सति कन्यां तु ब्राह्मणाय महात्मने ॥
कोप आसीन् महीपानाम् आलोक्यान्योन्यम् अन्तिकात् ॥
अस्मान् अयम् अतिक्रम्य तृणीकृत्य च संगतान् ॥
दातुम् इच्छति विप्राय द्रौपदीं योषितां वराम् ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tasmai ditsati kanyāṃ tu brāhmaṇāya mahātmane ||
kopa āsīn mahīpānām ālokyānyonyam antikāt ||
asmān ayam atikramya tṛṇīkṛtya ca saṃgatān ||
dātum icchati viprāya draupadīṃ yoṣitāṃ varām ||
Vaishampayana said: "When Drupada intended to give the maiden to that great brahmin, anger arose in the lords of the earth, and looking at one another nearby, they said: 'Scorning us and reckoning us, gathered here, as mere straw, he wishes to give Draupadi, the best of women, to a brahmin!'"

Here the wounded pride of kings boils over into anger. It is telling that what enrages these crowned men is not so much the loss of the bride as the imagined insult -- "we were reckoned as straw" -- their vanity has been touched. Here one sees how self-love turns defeat into grievance: the proud man suffers not from loss but from the sting to his own self-regard. So the text shows the pettiness of pride; the kings' anger is born not of truth but of pricked self-importance.
