Sarisrikva said: "Our mother has gone to father -- we know not where; and our wings have not yet grown, O lotus-bannered one; we have no savior, Agni, other than you; therefore protect us, O sole hero; by that auspicious form of yours and by those seven flames of yours protect us now, O praised one, us who seek refuge; you alone, O Jatavedas, have power to burn; there is no other burner among the rays, O god; protect us, though we are but child-rishis; pass us by, O bearer of oblations."

Here the defenseless surrender themselves wholly to the protection of the god. The words are significant: "we have no savior other than you" -- stripped of every support, the children turn to the one refuge. This is pure shelter-seeking (sharanagati): whoever, abandoning all other hope, surrenders to the Lord, is saved. Thus scripture reveals a prayer for refuge -- and self-surrender is the surest path to salvation.
