सो ऽन्वेषमाणः कौन्तेयान् पाञ्चाल्यो जनमेजय ॥
दृढं धनुर् अनायम्यं कारयाम् आस भारत ॥
यन्त्रं वैहायसं चापि कारयाम् आस कृत्रिमम् ॥
तेन यन्त्रेण सहितं राजा लक्ष्यं च काञ्चनम् ॥

Here the king devises a trial that only the incomparable can pass. It is telling that the bow is "almost unbendable," and the target is set behind a revolving device: Drupada deliberately sets a task no one can solve except the Arjuna he seeks. Some prizes can be reached only by the one who alone is worthy: the trial itself sifts out the unworthy. Thus the scripture shows the father's ingenious design to draw out the hidden hero; and the bow impossible for others becomes the sign by which the destined bridegroom is known.
