पुरोहितः सोमकानां मन्त्रविद् ब्राह्मणः शुचिः ॥
परिस्तीर्य जुहावाग्निम् आज्येन विधिना तदा ॥
स तर्पयित्वा ज्वलनं ब्राह्मणान् स्वस्ति वाच्य च ॥
वारयाम् आस सर्वाणि वादित्राणि समन्ततः ॥

अनुवाद
The purohita of the Somakas, a knower of mantras, a pure brahmin, having spread the kusha grass, poured oil into the fire according to rite; having satisfied the fire and blessed the brahmins, he stopped all the music everywhere.

Here the worldly contest is framed by a sacred rite. It is significant that before it begins, offerings are poured into the fire and the brahmins are blessed: even the choosing of a husband is consecrated by sacrifice and prayer. A good undertaking should be preceded by ritual, calling down blessing from above. Significant, too, is the silence that settles: before a sacred act, all commotion falls still. The text thus reveals that the svayamvara is not mere entertainment, but an act consecrated by fire and mantra; and into the newly fallen silence the challenge will now sound.
